So Many Things

I’ve written about Luyuan Market before.  It is always such an interesting experience, with so many things to see.  I love asking, “what is that?” and not knowing the answer.  I love thinking of those people long ago who belonged to those shoes, that jacket, that bowl.  We think of who wrote that scroll and who read it.  Who will read it still?  We think of who will buy that tiny wooden cage for a cricket.  I don’t suppose I shall ever know.

I sit beside the fire and think
Of all that I have seen
Of meadow flowers and butterflies
In summers that have been

Of yellow leaves and gossamer
In autumns that there were
With morning mist and silver sun
And wind upon my hair

I sit beside the fire and think
Of how the world will be
When winter comes without a spring
That I shall ever see

For still there are so many things
That I have never seen
In every wood in every spring
There is a different green

I sit beside the fire and think
Of people long ago
And people that will see a world
That I shall never know

But all the while I sit and think
Of times there were before
I listen for returning feet
And voices at the door

Thank you, Tolkien.  Enjoy.

Crazy Town

There is really a place our city,
Where you can buy one thing or fifty.
Wuai Market is the name.
Crazy chaos is the game.
Let’s get down to the nitty gritty.

Wuai Market is the place to find almost anything.  Almost.  All those things stamped “Made in China” that your friends in the US complain about, they are here and you might want them.  Here, they might not even have a “Made in..” stamp.  That doesn’t matter when you’re living in this economy.  Hell, it doesn’t really matter when you’re living in the global economy anyway.

Wuai Market (五爱市场) is located at various street numbers on Renao Lu, Shenhe District, Shenyang.  It is around the corner from the Doubletree by Hilton.  There is a website if you want to check it out, or you can look at this echinacities article for details.  You can find it on Google Maps just by searching Wuai Market Shenyang.

All of these photos were taken with an ipod touch in one trip to the area.

Good luck.  This is not a shopping mall.  Bargain hard.  Go early, not after 3:00.  Don’t get lost.
